Guadalupe

I just got back (ok, a couple of week ago now...) from Guadalupe, Mexico. Guadalupe, which is a small, volcanic, mostly uninhabited island about 150 miles off of the western cost of Mexico, is one of the premier places in the world to see Great White Sharks. White Sharks can be seen in other places as well, like South Africa and South Australia, but the visibility at Guadalupe is usually far better. I was amazed at the size of the bigger females we saw. I've seen big Tiger Sharks, but these Great Whites were just massive.



Photographically, it was frustrating to try to capture their size, since there was very little to give it scale. The beautiful blue water background just helped to shrink the apparent size of these beautiful animals. For next year, I have some thinking to do about trying to get more sense of scale when the big ones come around. I've been thinking about seeing if Jeff or Colm will model for me, you know, get really up close with the sharks. I'm thinking we could use the davit and lower them in, head first... maybe strap a couple of tuna heads to them.

Welcome to my blog thing, which I hope to turn into a regular thing. Note that I say "hope" - I know that a lot of people get started on blog type projects, and then find out how much work it is and, well, production drops off. My intent for this space is to talk about underwater photography, scuba, travel, general photography, and anything else my friends old and new want to chat about.
